| Grit bins are for paths warning | People in Northamptonshire have been urged not to take salt from pavement bins for private use. MGWSP, the highways service provider for the county council, said its 1,729 salt bins may take a week to replenish. "We urge people to remember that the salt is provided for public footways and salt should not be taken for private use' I rang MGWSP - The County Council Highways partner - this morning - 8th January regarding various empty grit bins reported to me over the three Parishes I serve as Clerk only to be told that all of the bins in the County had been replenished over the week only to be immediately emptied by gypsies and 'some landscape people' who were following the top up lorry around the County. The salt that you needed for the roads in your village has been sold on for private gain!! What a sad reflection on the society we live in. Can I however remind you, as MGWSP do above, that the salt in the bins is for ROADS AND FOOTPATHS and NOT for private drives so be aware that if you are seen taking salt other than for spreading on the road or public footpath you may be reported. Table salt or cat litter will do exactly the same job. OK you would have to pay for it but better that than being responsible for a serious accident because you have emptied a grit bin for personal use leaving none for the road and footpath.
