What is Homeopathy?
...and why might I want to know about it?Homeopathy is a natural form of treatment which works by stimulating the body to heal itself. Homeopathy works on the basis of "like cures like." In other words, that which harms us can also heal us. Any substance which can cause illness or symptoms in a healthy person can be used in a very dilute form to help treat those same symptoms.
First discovered in the seventeenth century by Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, 'Homeopathy' has been used in the UK for over two hundred years. As a treatment it can be used alongside conventional medicine, or some people choose to use it as an alternative treatment in its own right. Over 30 million people now use homeopathy across Europe.
Homeopathy is an holistic treatment; and treats the person as a whole as opposed to their illness. As an example, we all suffer from colds in a different way, it is only logical that we would respond better to different treatments. Homeopathy works best when an exact match is found between a patient's full range of symptoms, and a specific remedy.
The treatments given are called remedies which are made from a wide variety of natural substances such as plant extracts and minerals. The remedies are prepared in special Homeopathic Pharmacies, where the substance is dissolved in alcohol to prepare a tincture which is then diluted to an appropriate strength to match that of a patient's condition.
Homeopathy can be used to assist with many symptoms including fatigue, menopausal problems, skin conditions and seasonal complaints - it is suitable for all ages. It can also be very useful in speeding up healing after injury or surgery.
